Self-Analysis
Through the bars of his steely
cage he peers out,
Often preferring to look away from
that which threatens him.
Confined to himself by himself...
It feels safer that way.
Fear imprisons himself from the
threats and howls
Of Past,
Present,
And Possible...
Like the oldest brother,
Anger stands guard in front of the
cage,
Protecting Fear,
Occasionally looking for Sadness,
Who prefers not to be mentioned
nor discussed.
His suit of Armor offers few signs
of Weakness,
Were it not for the perceived
heels of Vulnerability
In Anger's mind,
Providing a direct pathway to
Pain...
And Memories...
His skin toughened by the scars of
past battles,
There are several layers,
Each becoming harder with the
passage of time.
Fearing, himself, to heal these
wounds,
Naked to the world should he lose
the scars...
Naked to Fear,
And Sadness
Who may return from the lurking
shadows of his mind…
Too much of a threat to imagine,
His post remains manned as he
looks to Ambition.
Off in the distance
There lies a hill.
During the night
There is a glow on the crest.
What lies beyond,
They can only imagine,
And Ambition can only see.
In front of the rest,
He plods through life.
Providing a promise of Peace and
Harmony,
Working to please the unpleaseable
echoes
Of Past and Present.
Never safe to show Weakness,
Resting only when necessary...
Striving, pursuing, reaching farther
and farther
Nothing stands in his way.
Like a parent to the others,
Ambition often returns to provide
Reassurance...
To Success,
Happiness,
Contentment,
And Hope...
Occasionally to call on Anger to
lead the way
In uncharted waters,
Providing strength against a
formidable enemy…
His eyes roll back,
He swings wildly,
An innocent is wounded.
A small price to pay
To protect the Self...
Safety in numbers they always
say...
So why does Ambition walk alone...
Why does Anger stand at his lonely
post...
Why does Fear live in isolation...
Why does Sadness fear the comfort
of others...
